Charleston Calling

The founder of Textures returns home with two decades of custom hardwood mastery

TWENTY YEARS AGO, ANDREW DENNY WAS RUNNING A SMALL SHOP IN EAST Nashville. Today, he’s cutting the ribbon on a sleek 1,620-square-foot showroom in Charleston’s hottest design district, bringing his luxury hardwood company full circle to his home state of South Carolina.

Denny’s concept originated from the realization that there was a gap in the market for handcrafted, small-batch hardwood products that catered to architects, designers and homeowners looking for something beyond mass-produced alternatives. This vision guided Denny’s company, Textures, through two decades of growth and earned it a respected position in Nashville’s prestigious Design Collective.

A large part of what sets the company apart is its unique approach: Every piece it makes is built to stand the test of time, with wood finishes that are made to retain their beauty and charm no matter how home design trends change.

For Denny, the expansion into Charleston represents more than just business growth; it’s a homecoming. “Opening our showroom in Charleston feels deeply personal,” he says. “Textures has always been about celebrating beauty, and Charleston, rich in history, design and soul, is a place that truly embodies that.”

The decision to establish a presence in Charleston was influenced by the city’s acclaimed architecture and design community. From the charm of historical mansions to the thoughtful design of modern developments, Charleston shares Textures’ fundamental values of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The city’s robust design ecosystem, with its blend of established firms and emerging talent, is an ideal environment for the company’s custom approach to hardwood creations.

Textures’ entry into the Charleston market came about through a strategic partnership with Encore Lumber, a well-established local business with deep community roots. This collaboration combines Textures’ expertise in custom hardwood products with Encore Lumber’s trusted local presence in reclaimed lumber and millwork. This partnership is a perfect example of how the Charleston design world operates; the best projects are always a result of building strong relationships.

The new showroom, open to both industry professionals and the public, is situated on the ground floor of Storehouse Nine within the Charleston Design District, positioning Textures in the hub of one of the Southeast’s most vibrant and creative design destinations. The company joins an impressive roster of established Charleston names like The Urban Electric Co., Fritz Porter, Benjamin Paul Studio, Celadon Home and Smithey Ironware Company, which have already set the tone as a destination for discerning design professionals. The district also houses a collection of local makers in its Maker Studios, including Floral Studies, Middleton Made Knives and Kate McDonald Bridal. This mix fosters an environment that celebrates both commercial success and traditional craft. Looking ahead, Schumacher and Kravet are expected to open this fall, and these textile giants will soon be neighbors with Textures in both Nashville and Charleston, creating intriguing possibilities across markets.

The Charleston showroom serves as a comprehensive showcase for Textures’ diverse offerings, with each collection representing a different approach to luxury hardwood craftsmanship. The Foundation collection serves as the cornerstone of its offerings, featuring textured hardwoods that provide an elegant canvas for creative exploration. What distinguishes the Foundation series is its remarkable adaptability—it seamlessly transitions from flooring to wall treatments to ceiling applications. Architects, homeowners and interior designers appreciate this versatility because it allows them to use the same material throughout a project while still maintaining creative flexibility.

All boards in the Foundation collection are crafted from fine European oak, designed in-house at the company’s Nashville headquarters, and finished by its Appalachian-based milling partners. The collection offers remarkable customization with 16 distinctive colors, four board widths and custom finishing options to create a unique foundation that can adapt to any design vision.

For clients seeking truly bespoke solutions, Textures Curated represents a high-touch design service geared toward custom, one-of-a-kind wood creations. Each Textures Curated product is tailor-made for the project at hand, sourced from the finest materials and made in collaboration with clients. This service creates custom hardwood applications for bespoke environments where standard products simply won’t do.

The Textures Revival collection features authentic age and beauty that you can’t fake by any means. Revival boards are made from scarce and highly sought-after reclaimed wood found in the Southeastern waterways. Sinker beams and river salvage represent hand-cut timbers lost in transit and aged underwater for decades, creating patinas and character marks that only time and nature can provide.

Complementing its flooring offerings, Textures Bench Made provides handmade wood solutions designed to complement flooring installations. The in-house design team can create integrated wood applications, including floor vents, stair treads, ceiling and wall panels, beams, baseboards and other millwork. This comprehensive approach ensures that every wooden element in a space works in harmony, creating a cohesive design that elevates ordinary rooms into extraordinary spaces.

The award-winning Jeffrey Dungan Architectural Collection represents the pinnacle of design collaboration, based on natural textures and honest materials created in partnership with Jeffrey Dungan Architects. All hardwoods are made from Appalachian white oak and manufactured in the United States, supporting both local craftsmanship and sustainable practices. The collection offers a modern classical take on traditional vernacular that leverages natural patina and timeless design that feels at home in any era, making it particularly well-suited to Charleston’s blend of historic and contemporary architecture.

Textures’ approach to custom design allows each project to reflect the unique vision of its creators while maintaining what the company describes as “a foundation of timeless tones and textures,” a philosophy that resonates particularly well in the Holy City, where the tension between historic preservation and contemporary needs requires nuanced solutions.

Vice president Scott Moore believes the Charleston expansion represents an exciting next chapter for Textures, with the company looking forward to building relationships with local architects and designers. This relationship-focused approach extends beyond traditional business development to include creative collaborations and industry engagement. One innovative aspect of Textures’ community-building strategy involves its Couture & Construction podcast, produced in Nashville. The company plans to invite Charleston’s architects, designers and builders to share their insights and stories through this platform, further strengthening connections within the broader design community.

The new Charleston showroom isn’t just about expansion—it marks the company’s shift from a regional specialty supplier to a national design leader. By entering Charleston’s vibrant design market, Textures can serve the Southeast’s booming luxury sector while keeping its craft-focused roots. For Charleston’s design community, this means access to specialized products and services that enhance the city’s already strong architecture and design scene, giving local creatives a valuable new resource. *
