Founded in 1997 by a group of local artists whose objective was to create a place to display their works and network with other artists within the community, the Georgetown Art Gallery (GAG) is Georgetown’s only cooperative gallery. The gallery represents 20 local artists, who fill the space with an exciting and remarkable selection of art covering an extensive variety of styles, techniques and mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolors, encaustics, pastels, ceramics and photography.
Among the GAG’s artists are Johnnie Cowan, an award-winning Lowcountry artist and founding member of the Georgetown County Watercolor Society; Sissy Carroll, a retired South Carolina art teacher, Lowcountry and regional targeted artist and current president of GAG; Lorraine Dauphin, a freelance designer and illustrator whose oils and pastels hang in businesses, private homes and small galleries throughout the Northeast and South Carolina; Kathleen Stuart, an award-winning encaustic and fiber artist; and Clay Johnson, who paints the rich landscape of the Lowcountry.
Each member artist must pass a jurying process, which ensures that the gallery maintains a diverse selection of artwork of the highest quality. Additionally, GAG member artists donate work to the South Carolina Maritime Museum’s annual fundraiser.
