GEORGETOWN ART GALLERY

FOUNDED in 1997 by a group of local artists whose objective was to create a place to display their works and network with other artists within the community, the Georgetown Art Gallery is Georgetown’s only cooperative gallery. Its 20 artists comprise a diverse range of incredible talent working in a variety of styles, techniques and mediums, including oil, acrylic, watercolors, encaustic, pastels, ceramics and photography.

Among the gallery’s artists are Johnnie Cowan, an award-winning Lowcountry artist and founding member of the Georgetown County Watercolor Society, and Sissy Carroll, a retired art teacher and the current gallery president. Oil painter Diane White’s contemporary twist on landscapes, coastal birds and still lifes have been juried into many national and regional exhibitions, while Beth Wilson has found her stride in abstraction. Her recent work has been juried into the Eastern Carolina Contemporary Biennial. Joe Tempel loves to capture the “sense of place” in his landscape photographs, using a semiabstract style to focus on the essence of a place.

“We are proud to have been a successful artist cooperative for over 27 years,” says Carroll. “Through this cooperative, we have been able to support, encourage and showcase each other as well as promote the arts in our community.”
