Founded in 1997 by a group of local artists, the Georgetown Art Gallery was established as a space for artists to display their work and connect with others in the community. The gallery is Georgetown’s only cooperative art space, representing 20 local artists and showcasing a vibrant and diverse collection of art and an impressive range of styles.
Among the gallery’s artists are award-winning landscape artist Johnnie Cowan, who paints the natural environment of the marshes and ocean. Tina Proctor believes watercolor has an independent force; she paints the South Carolina coast. Originally from Mumbai, self-taught artist Debanjana Bhattacharjee is a plein air painter who captures fleeting light. The energy and light of the Lowcountry inspires Kathleen Kazior, whose loose, expressionistic style often features vivid, sometimes bold colors that are intentionally exaggerated. Katherine Wynn Patrick’s bold colors and fluid brushwork capture the light and energy en plein air.
Member artists are selected through a jurying process to ensure the gallery maintains a diverse, high-quality collection. The artists also contribute to the community by donating works to the South Carolina Maritime Museum’s annual fundraiser and support various outreach programs.
