GEORGETOWN ART GALLERY

Since its founding in 1997 by a group of local artists, Georgetown Art Gallery has remained Georgetown’s only cooperative gallery. The gallery’s community of artists represent a diverse range of incredible talent in a variety of styles, techniques and mediums.

Member artists include award-winning landscape artist Johnnie Cowan, known for her deft use of oils and watercolors and Lowcountry marsh and ocean scenes. In contrast to Cowan’s painterly works, oil painter Kathleen Spicer’s use of vibrant colors and shapes create a semiabstract style that uniquely captures her beloved Lowcountry.

Sissy Carroll’s work explores a more narrative voice, depicting treasured memories of growing up on tobacco farms in small-town South Carolina, where her family’s ties to tobacco ran deep, from those who grew it to an uncle who auctioned it. Susan Moore, meanwhile, moves between abstraction, landscapes and still lifes, using oils and acrylics to achieve the varied techniques for which she has become known.

North Carolinian transplant Jane Thomas continues that connection to place, translating it into paintings that are essentially love letters to the South Carolina coast and its calming influence.

In each of these artists’ works, the Lowcountry is a daily inspiration brought to life on canvas.
