Mallory and Edward’s amazing Awendaw affair

A strict company dating policy couldn’t keep Mallory Gilbert and Edward Wilfong apart; not long after becoming cubemates, the two became a couple. Edward proposed in a giant tree house during a New Year’s trip to Palmetto Bluff, and they exchanged vows in Awendaw the following fall.

Mallory and Edward were drawn to the quiet seclusion of Pepper Plantation, nestled along the Wando River north of Charleston. “I’m never going to be a fancy kind of girl,” Mallory says of her attraction to the plantation. “I fell in love with Pepper the moment I saw it. It was perfectly rustic and perfectly simple. With the big oak beams, the red roof, the fire pit and the live oaks, it was dreamy and romantic.”

The couple worked with Lauren Miller to create a wedding that truly reflected their personalities. “Anyone who knows me knows that I love the sunshine, the color orange and wildflowers in my home at all times,” Mallory says. “I like to be comfortable and have a good time. Our wedding was rustic and comfortable, full of family and friends who were gathered to share food, drink, conversation and maybe a few jigs on the dance floor. And I wanted s’mores. It was a non-negotiable.”

Besides that classic campfire snack, the newlyweds fed their guests a Lowcountry-inspired menu of fried green tomatoes, crab cakes, pork tenderloin, sweet potato biscuits and pimento cheese from Charleston’s Café Catering. As for decor, the bride scoured antiques malls across the Lowcountry to find just the right Southern-style details for the wedding. “Southern weddings are about family and tradition, the combination of relaxed and formal feel, the mix of old and new in stark contrast,” Mallory says.

The couple chose photographer Reese Moore to document their day based on her attention to detail and a reputation that preceded her. “Our wedding was one part love of family and friends, one part sweat from so many who helped make the day what it was.” “Before I met Reese, she was described as a ninja,” Mallory says. “She has an uncanny ability to be exactly where she needs to be at all times. I don’t think it’s possible that I could have been any happier with the images and sweet moments she was able to capture.”
