ART ON THE SQUARE FINE ART GALLERY

The gallery’s warm, welcoming atmosphere is a hallmark of its own, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy original art from local artists in a relaxed setting that inspires creativity. “Whether you are an experienced collector, a first-time buyer or looking for a piece that speaks to your heart, we invite you to come explore the stories and talent behind every brushstroke,” says Debbie Grogen, an artist-owner who shares ownership of the gallery with the cooperative’s other featured artists. “The gallery provides a rich and engaging experience, with something new to see during every visit and original art on display in every size and price range. We also host a reception every third Thursday of the month featuring three of our artists, whose work is prominently displayed in our show windows. It’s a fantastic way to get acquainted with each artist and their work.”

The gallery’s environment is born of collaboration, community and creativity—cultural cornerstones that have been foundational since it opened its doors in 1998 under the name Art Central. The artist-run co-op filled a void in Summerville when there were very few galleries in the area, functioning as a collective space that espoused the idea that art should be a part of daily life rather than being isolated in major cities and museums.

That philosophy is readily apparent in the gallery’s dedication to community engagement. In addition to artist exhibitions, the gallery offers classes and workshops taught by award-winning local artists in watercolor, pastel, alcohol ink, needle felting, acrylics and oils. These hands-on classes encourage creativity and provide artists of all skill levels opportunities to learn and develop their own techniques and talents. “Art on the Square is more than a gallery; it is a creative hub that celebrates the talent, diversity and spirit of the Summerville community,” says Grogen.

Featured works include Defiance by Becky Tilton, Driftwood Beach by Belle Anderson and Point Arena Lighthouse by Nancy Palmie, alongside an eclectic collection of additional pieces, such as Grogen’s Sunset at the Marina, Chuck Hamilton’s Strange Fruit Pie, Renee Bruce’s Sunset Glow, Cheryl Considine’s Peaceful Oasis and Judy Hopkins Jacobs’ Pensées Nocturne.
