If you’re a coffee enthusiast, you’ll be excited to know that Counter Culture Coffee (CCC), the Durham, North Carolina-based coffee roaster, recently opened a Charleston Training Center on Spring Street.
The Training Center, which is CCC’s 10th in the United States, offers education to professionals and aficionados alike. Baristas from the area’s top restaurants and cafés attend their Counter Intelligence workshops and classes, while the public can enjoy free tastings every Friday morning as part of its Tasting at Ten series.
Counter Culture Coffee has been dedicated, since 1995, to bringing to market some of the world’s best coffees. Its mission is to source (from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas), roast and deliver the most exquisite coffee in the world. The company buys beans from farmers with whom it builds long-term relationships, and offers coffee at the peak of freshness and flavor. Also, through a program called Seeds, CCC supports projects in coffee-growing communities that improve the natural environment and promote education.
Their newest limited-release coffee, Sweat Valley High from Ethiopia, is a 50/50 blend of beans from two cooperatives near the renowned coffee town of Yirgacheffe. CCC says the blend is flavorful—“a floral tealike coffee with citrus notes and a juicy sweetness.”
Charleston was one of the first markets the roaster entered nearly 20 years ago. Many local coffee shops, restaurants and specialty grocers—including City Lights Coffee, The Muddy Water Coffee Bar, Bull Street Gourmet, Hominy Grill and Edmund’s Oast—carry their products.
