ARTIST Deborah R Hill finds inspiration in the depth of color and form in the natural world, including rural vistas, beaches, marshes and fauna, but she is equally inspired working from a still life in the studio. Hill works from her studios in Charleston and Aurora, New York. Her work can best be described as abstract realism. Through the use of color and paint applications, she creates paintings that give the viewer a new visual language.
The Crossroads series is an ongoing body of work that addresses the subject of mobility—that which is accessible, inaccessible and the divisions or challenges that can arise. The series explores the idea that mobility can be a state of mind ruled by circumstances. She utilizes the subject of the horse in all the paintings as it was one of the first means to allow humankind mobility.
Hill earned a fine arts degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a concentration in painting and was awarded the Faculty Award for Excellence in the field of art. In Charleston she received Best in Show at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 2018. Hill’s work is held in collections nationwide and overseas. She is represented by LePrince Fine Art Galleries at 183/184 King St. in Charleston; Spa Fine Art Galleries in Saratoga Springs, New York; and Shane Gallery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
