It all started with a hat. Recently engaged Charleston couple Susi Grob and George Nathan Stoner (who goes by Stoner) were shopping on King Street when the groom-to-be spotted a bowler hat that he had to have. The vintage-style topper would go on to inspire the eclectic, fun-loving vibe of their wedding day.

The pair had very specific criteria when searching for their wedding venue: They wanted an outdoor ceremony beneath a big tree by the water. When they discovered Old Wide Awake Park in Hollywood, they knew it was perfect.

After swapping vows by the Stono River, the couple celebrated with friends and family in the property’s spacious barn. The building was outfitted with handmade touches throughout, including hundreds of yards of bunting, custom Cornhole sets and wooden cake stands.

The food offerings reflected Susi and Stoner’s love of food trucks. Local favorites Hello My Name Is BBQ and Carolina Creole created options like shrimp ‘n’ grits, barbecue sliders with three kinds of mac ‘n’ cheese, muffulettas, and late-night chicken and waffles. For drinks, they had six different brews on tap that were served out of a fire truck from Mac’s Place—a nod to Stoner’s job as a firefighter. Rather than serve a traditional tiered cake, the couple asked guests to bring desserts.

“Our wedding was very ‘us.’ We wanted it to be something timeless as opposed to trendy, with a lot of handmade touches,” Susi says. “The entire day was perfect and the only thing I would change is to make it longer!”
