It’s time again for Spoleto Festival USA, which runs May 22 through June 7. This year’s program promises to be as exciting as ever. Artists from across the United States and nine foreign countries will present over 150 performances, to be staged at multiple venues around the city.

We’ve studied the program and picked some highlights. Shakespeare’s Globe will be making its Spoleto Festival USA debut with a new production of Romeo and Juliet. The internationally renowned company, based at the reconstructed Globe theatre in London, is known for its authentic productions of Shakespeare’s works. Two operas will also make their world premieres here—Paradise Interrupted, a visually stunning contemporary opera by Chinese composer Huang Ruo, and Franceso Cavalli’s baroque opera, Veremonda, l’amazzone di Aragona. The performances of Veremonda will be the first in over 350 years!

Dance highlights include the Scottish Ballet’s acclaimed adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and performances by the Trisha Brown Dance Company.

The American Express Woolfe Street Series will feature music and dance in a cabaret- style setting at the Woolfe Street Playhouse. Artists in this series include Taylor Mac, Lil Buck & Ashley Bathgate and the contemporary music duo, The Living Earth Show.
